How to Know You’re Covering the Curriculum (Without Following a School Schedule)

Feeling Like You’re Not Doing Enough?

One of the biggest fears homeschool parents have is this:

“Am I actually covering the curriculum?”

It’s a constant thought in the background.

Even on your best days, there’s still that little voice wondering if you’ve missed something.

And it makes sense.

We’ve all been taught that learning looks like:

• Timetables

• Workbooks

• Separate subjects

• Structured school days

So when your homeschool doesn’t look like that… it can feel like you’re falling behind.

But here’s the truth:

👉 You’re probably doing more than you think.

The Problem Isn’t What You’re Teaching… It’s What You’re Tracking

Most homeschool parents are already covering key learning areas naturally.

Think about your day:

• Reading together → English ✔

• Cooking → Maths ✔

• Talking through ideas → Language ✔

• Exploring outside → Science ✔

The learning is happening.

But it doesn’t feel like enough… because you’re not tracking it clearly.

Schools make learning visible through:

• Worksheets

• Tests

• Reports

But homeschooling looks different.

Without a clear way to see what you’re covering, it creates doubt — even when you’re doing a great job.

What the Curriculum Actually Requires (And What It Doesn’t)

Here’s something that often gets misunderstood:

👉 The curriculum is not a checklist of worksheets.

👉 It’s a framework of skills and outcomes.

That means your child doesn’t need to:

• Sit at a desk all day

• Complete pages of work

• Follow a strict timetable

They need to:

• Develop literacy skills

• Build numeracy understanding

• Explore the world around them

• Communicate, think, and problem-solve

And these things can happen in everyday life.

Why You Don’t Need a School Schedule at Home

Trying to copy school at home is one of the fastest ways to burn out.

Schools are designed for:

• 20–30 students

• Fixed time blocks

• Standardised delivery

Homeschooling is completely different.

You have:

• Flexibility

• One-on-one attention

• The ability to move at your child’s pace

Which means…

👉 You don’t need to do every subject every day

👉 You don’t need rigid time blocks

👉 You don’t need to recreate school

What you need is clarity.

A Simpler Way to Know You’re Covering Everything

Instead of asking:

“Did we do enough today?”

Shift to:

👉 “What key areas did we cover this week?”

This is where everything changes.

A simple weekly structure might include:

• Literacy (reading, writing, speaking)

• Numeracy (numbers, measuring, problem-solving)

• Science / discovery

• Real-world learning (life skills, conversations, experiences)

Now instead of guessing…

You can clearly see what’s being covered.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Here’s an example of how learning overlaps naturally:

Baking together:

• Measuring → Maths

• Reading recipe → English

• Observing changes → Science

Nature walk:

• Observing plants/animals → Science

• Talking about what you see → Language

• Drawing or writing about it → English

Everyday conversations:

• Vocabulary

• Critical thinking

• Communication skills

This is real learning.

And it counts.

The Shift That Changes Everything

When you move from:

❌ “Am I doing enough?”

to

✅ “I can see what we’re covering”

Everything feels lighter.

• Less stress

• More confidence

• More freedom to enjoy learning

Because now you know:

👉 You’re not falling behind

👉 You’re building real, meaningful learning

👉 You’re covering what actually matters

You Don’t Need More… You Need Simplicity

Most parents think they need:

• More curriculum

• More structure

• More subjects

But what they actually need is:

👉 A simple system that makes learning visible

Something that helps you:

• See what you’re covering

• Stay on track without overwhelm

• Feel confident in your homeschool

Final Thoughts

Homeschooling doesn’t have to feel uncertain.

You don’t need to copy school.

You don’t need to do everything.

And you definitely don’t need to feel like you’re constantly behind.

With the right approach, you can:

✔ Know you’re covering the curriculum

✔ Keep things simple

✔ And actually enjoy the journey
